Mel Reid Blasts LPGA Marketing After Solheim Cup Ratings Plunge

-

The Solheim Cup delivered the drama, but the television numbers tell a different story. Mel Reid, the European vice-captain, says the LPGA has a massive problem that money alone cannot fix. The viewership for the final day in the Netherlands dropped to just 170,000 on Golf Channel. That is a clear step down from the 179,000 who tuned in the day before, and it pales in comparison to the 277,000 viewers who watched the final day in Spain back in 2023, per Golfweek. The best golf on the planet got a tiny audience, and Reid is furious about why.

The Heartbreak of Bad Numbers

Reid did not mince words when she discussed the drop in fans. She admitted on the “Quiet Please” podcast that the viewing figures were “really heartbreaking” because the players are giving everything they have. The matches were perfectly poised with the teams tied at 8-8 heading into the Sunday singles. Jennifer Kupcho’s heroics kept the pressure on, yet the audience did not show up in the numbers. Reid pointed out that the timing was odd for American fans since it was the middle of the night in Europe, but she refused to let that be the only excuse.

“I don’t know what the f— we’re doing so wrong to be quite honest with you, because that is literally one of the greatest sporting events that we get to witness all year, men or women, especially women,” Reid said. She feels the players are delivering the entertainment, but the marketing machine is failing them completely. The LPGA needs to fix how it sells these moments to the public, or the product will suffer even when the golf is great.

Marketing Is the Real Opponent

The vice-captain identified the root cause with brutal honesty. She stated that marketing is a “big problem on the LPGA” and called the budget “horrific.” This is not a complaint about the quality of play or the skill of the athletes. It is a direct hit at the league’s leadership and their ability to get people to watch. Reid believes the players are rising to the occasion every time, but the league is not doing its job to get eyes on the screen. The Solheim Cup is supposed to be the peak of the year, yet the numbers show a disconnect that needs immediate attention.

“The fact that viewership was for the f—— Solheim Cup is actually really heartbreaking to me,” she added, noting that it is the best competition available. The gap between the quality of the golf and the size of the crowd is widening, and Reid thinks the tour needs to invest more to close it. Without a change in strategy, the best players in the world will continue to play to empty screens.

The tour cannot ignore these figures forever. The 2027 schedule is currently being finalized, and J.D. Sterba, the LPGA’s vice president of communications, told Golfweek that the tour is “genuinely excited about where it’s headed.” Sterba noted that they are focusing on routing, courses, and purses as top priorities. Yet, if the marketing budget remains as small as Reid claims, those new events will struggle to find an audience. The LPGA has the talent to win, but it needs the marketing to make sure people actually see it.
