A Surprise Second Start
Rory McIlroy is not just visiting Australia for the Australian Open. Before the 2027 PGA Tour season starts, the six-time major champion has verified his plan to include another tournament. This move keeps the world number two in the region for more than a week. GolfMagic reported that McIlroy plans to compete in the Cathedral Invitational. This event is hosted by the exclusive Cathedral Lodge & Golf Club in Victoria on December 10.
McIlroy told Golf Australia directly about his plans. He said, “I’m going to stay for a couple of days after,” regarding the Australian Open. The Northern Irishman added, “I’m going to play the Cathedral Invitational, which benefits Adam Scott’s foundation.” He also shared his excitement, noting, “So, I’m going to stay down for that. I’m excited for that as well.”
This is a smart play for a player who knows how to manage his time. From December 3 to 6, Kingston Heath Golf Club in Melbourne will hold the Australian Open. McIlroy will play 18 holes at the Cathedral Invitational, which is a 36-hole event started in 2022. The venue is very private, so fans will have limited chances to watch him in action. It is a quiet, focused week for a star who usually draws huge crowds.
More Than Just Golf
McIlroy has always used these trips to bring his family along. His wife, Erica Stoll, and their daughter, Poppy, have joined him on travels before. During his 2025 visit to Melbourne, he took time to enjoy the city’s famous coffee culture. He even visited Melbourne Park, the home of the Australian Open tennis tournament. This mix of golf and travel makes the long trip worth it for everyone involved.
The world number one, Scottie Scheffler, has shown interest in visiting Australia and New Zealand too. Scheffler called that part of the world a “great kind of getaway place” for his family. Competing on the Sandbelt courses in Australia would be special, he noted. However, Scheffler admitted that traveling with a young family makes it hard right now. For now, McIlroy is the biggest name making the trip happen.
Last year, McIlroy returned to the Australian Open for the first time since 2014. He finished tied for 14th at 7-under par at Royal Melbourne. That event drew over 112,000 spectators, establishing it as the most-attended golf tournament in Australian history. The crowds love him, and he clearly loves the vibe. Adding a second event shows he wants to keep that momentum going.
The Road to 2027
The 2027 PGA Tour season begins on January 21 with The American Express. McIlroy’s extended stay in Australia gives him plenty of time to rest before the new campaign. He might call this his “Potentially the end of my season” before the break, but it is really a fresh start. The Cathedral Invitational benefits Adam Scott’s foundation, which adds a nice layer of charity to the competitive mix.
McIlroy has encouraged other top players to join him in Australia. He knows the value of exposing his family to different cultures. As the tour heads toward the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Ireland, every competitive start matters. This extra week in Victoria shows McIlroy is still hungry to test himself against the best, even in a smaller field. It is a bold move that keeps him in the spotlight when the world is usually quiet.
