Bryson DeChambeau opens up about Tiger Woods' intense mindset and a moment in the Bahamas that left him taken aback. Here is the truth.

Golf is a game of fine margins and even finer rules. This week at the Taiwan Golf and Country Club, those margins turned into a total disaster for MJ Maguire. He didn’t just lose a shot or a hole. He lost his entire standing in a $1.2 million event because of a simple mistake with a timer. It is the kind of heartbreak that makes you want to shake the rulebook.

The three minute mistake

The drama unfolded at the ninth hole, a par-four. According to Golf Monthly, Maguire hit a tee shot that landed in the rough on the right side. He, his caddie, a fellow competitor, and a ball spotter all searched for the ball. The search was long. Eventually, a spectator found a ball that people believed was the original. But there was a massive problem with the timing. A spokesperson from the Asian Tour stated that more than three minutes had passed between the start of the search and when the ball was found. Under Rule 18.2a, a ball is officially lost if it isn’t found within that three-minute window.

Playing the wrong ball

Maguire thought he still had time. He believed the search period had not ended, so he decided to keep playing with the ball the spectator found. This was a huge error. Because the time had already run out, that found ball was no longer legal. Golf Monthly reported that because he played the wrong ball, the committee hit him with a two-stroke penalty under Rule 6.3c. He also needed to fix the mistake before starting the next hole, but he didn’t. This failure to correct the error is what ultimately led to his disqualification from the tournament.

A lost opportunity in Taiwan

It is a tough way to exit a big event. Maguire had a great start to the week, carding a one-under-par 71 in the opening round on Thursday. That score put him inside the top 20, only four strokes behind the leader, Kevin Yuan. He also had the pedigree of a recent winner, having claimed the 2024 Black Mountain Championship. Now, all that momentum is gone. The tournament continues with Chien-Yao Hung in the mix, but the story of the week remains the American who ran out of time.
