The PGA Tour is finally killing the “starting strokes” format that confused casual fans for years. Rory McIlroy says the new plan is exactly what the game needed. He told Golf Monthly that the tour leaders listened to the crowd and made the right move. The old system felt like a math problem. The new one feels like a real fight and something fans will want to watch.
A Big Swing for Match Play
Details of the revamp were announced ahead of this week’s event at East Lake. The new-look event will begin in 2028. It will run for two weeks at two different venues. This is a massive change from the single-week, single-site format we know. McIlroy called it “cool” and said the tour “taken a big swing.” He believes the concept works. The top 32 players will qualify via the season-long points list. Half of them will move to week two. This cuts the field in half and raises the stakes immediately. Brian Rolapp, the PGA Tour CEO, said the goal was to create a model that is easier to follow. The tour plans to rotate between prestigious venues. Some of these courses have never hosted the event before. Golf Monthly noted these are “courses the modern PGA Tour has not traditionally been able to feature.” That opens up the map for new fans.
Winning Matters More Than Ever
The new format forces players to win matches to survive. It is not enough to just be good. You must beat a specific opponent. McIlroy noted a potential issue for players fighting for lower spots. He said, “It’s going to be hard for some guys to be playing match play and playing for 14th position or whatever it is.” That is a fair point. Match play is brutal when you are not fighting for the trophy. But the tour wants drama. The first week features a three-round group stage. The top two from each group advance. Week two will be a four-round match-play bracket. All 16 players will compete in all four rounds. Records over these rounds will decide the final standings. Only the two undefeated players will fight for the title. This creates a clear narrative. It is simple. It is clear. It is what the fans have wanted.
The regular season champion will be recognized at the PGA Tour Championship Series Finale. This event happens before the match play finale. McIlroy thinks the incentives are right. He told Golf Monthly, “I think the PGA Tour and the Future Competition Committee and Brian and everyone involved have really taken on board what the fans have been calling for and have wanted, which is match play.” He also said, “It’s certainly different. Two weeks, two different venues. But it’s cool. I think they’ve taken a big swing, and conceptually, I think I really like it.” The tour is betting that fans will tune in for the bracket. They are betting that players will rise to the occasion. The dates for the new venues will be set on February 22nd 2027. That is almost six months away. But the plan is clear. The tour is ready to change the game. McIlroy thinks it will be a great thing. “But I think it’s sort of a departure from what we’ve had the last few years, but I do think it’ll be a great thing.” The old way is dead. The new way starts in 2028.
