The Arkansas Razorbacks women’s golf team started slow but found their rhythm on the back nine at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational. While the host team struggled early, senior Maria Jose Marin turned the tide with a remarkable performance that put her at the top of the individual leaderboard. The team finished the opening day at 3-over-par 291, a score that reflects a difficult morning followed by a strong afternoon finish at the par-72 course.
A Late Surge Changes the Game
Morning rounds were rough for the Hogs, who shot 6-over on the front nine before shifting gears. The real story belongs to Marin, who made her fourth appearance at this event and completely dominated the back side. Marin turned it on starting at No. 10 and recorded five birdies in her first six holes of the afternoon. Leading the field with a 4-under-par total, she posted 3-under on the par 4s. This kind of late-round aggression is exactly what separates good players from the best on any tour.
Sophomore Sara Brentcheneff also showed promise in her debut, leading the team with a 2-under front nine. She birdied three of her last four holes to secure a strong position. However, the rest of the lineup faced tough breaks. Freshman Melliyal Schmitt started well at 2-under but suffered a triple bogey on the 11th hole and a double bogey on the 13th. To reach even par, she recovered by sinking three birdies across her final five holes.
Alabama’s Commanding Position
While Arkansas fought to find consistency, Alabama took control of the tournament with a dominant display. The Crimson Tide finished 8-under to take a 12-stroke lead heading into Sunday’s second round. That is a massive margin in collegiate golf, where a single bad hole can cost a team dearly. The gap between the host team and the leader is significant, and the Razorbacks will need a near-perfect round to catch up.
Other individual players faced similar struggles. Senior Abbey Schutte’s 78 was dropped from the team score, while Swetha Sathish carded a 77 in her first BCI appearance. Ebba Liljeberg birdied her first hole but ended up 5-over going into the par-5 15th. Despite these challenges, the team managed to recover on the back nine with a 4-under finish. The ability to bounce back after a bad start is a key trait for any competitive squad.
What to Watch on Sunday
Starting from the 10th tee at 8:25 a.m. on Sunday, the Hogs will begin play. Marin, Brentcheneff, and the rest of the starters face a steep climb to close the gap. Individual players Natalie Blonien and Melliyal Schmitt will tee off slightly earlier at 8:15 a.m. in the T2 grouping. Blonien struggled early at 5-over through nine but finished strong with three birdies to get to 3-over. The pressure will be on Arkansas to play flawless golf, as Alabama has already set a very high bar.
